Mobile Devices

Google provides excellent service on most major mobile phones.  Below are links to help you connect your mobile device to Google Apps.

Google also provides instructions for almost any mobile device. From your mobile device's Web browser, just visit and follow the on-screen instructions. Remember - your username is your Notre Dame email address (e.g.,!


Note: Some versions of Android differ slightly from what is presented below. These instructions should work for most versions of Android with only slight differences.

Add your Google Apps account to your device.  To use the native Google Apps mail, contacts, and calendar apps on your Android, you need to sign in to your Google Apps account. You only have to do this once:

  1. Open the Settings app and go to the Accounts section
  2. Tap Add account

  3. Select Google
  4. Enter your NetID email address, formatted like

  5. Tap Next
  6. Tap Accept

  7. Enter your NetID (without the part) and your password

  8. Tap LOGIN
  9. If you have Two-Step Login activated on your account, you will be prompted to complete that process.
  10. Choose if you want to back up your mobile device data with Google

  12. Your account is now set up and will display as Google

That's it! You can now use Google Apps from your Android. Just launch Gmail, Google Calendar, or whichever app you want to use, from your device's home or applications screen.

To access other Google Apps services (e.g., Docs) or other Google services, visit in your mobile browser. Remember that your username for all Google Apps services is (e.g.,

iPhone/iOS Devices

The following instructions will work for iPhone and other iOS devices (iPad, iPod Touch, etc.)

Requirements and Backing Up Data

  1. Perform a sync with iTunes to ensure that Contacts and Calendars from your iOS device are backed up to your computer. Learn more
  2. Check your Safari cookies settings to see if it is set to "From Visited" or "Always". If it's set to "Never", you're more likely to be prompted to solve a CAPTCHA. 

Getting Started

There are two ways to configure your device to use Gmail:

Gmail iOS App

You may be interested in the Gmail App which is developed by Gmail as an alternative to the iOS mail app. You can do so following these instructions.
  1. Download and install the Gmail App from the App Store
  2. Press the Settings button in the top-left corner of the app
  3. Press Add Account
  4. In the window that appears, enter your email address and leave the password blank
  5. This will take you to a CAS page to log in using your NetID and password
  6. And you're done! If you want to use the Gmail iOS App and still have your contacts and calendars sync, follow the instructions above and at step 9, disable mail.

Google Sync with Exchange

If you already have an Exchange connection configured on your iOS device, you can edit that account data in Settings > Mail, Contacts, and Calendar.  Select your Notre Dame account, then make these changes:
  1. Change the Server name to:
  2. Remove any information in the domain field so that it is empty
  3. Change your username to: (e.g.,
If you have no previous configuration for Notre Dame email and calendar on your iOS device:
  1. On your device's home screen, open the Settings application. 
  2. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars
  3. Tap Add Account
  4. Tap Exchange

    Note: While selecting Google will give you basic Calendar and Google Mail access, you will be losing some of the advanced features of calendaring and contacts. Selecting Exchange and following the steps below will ensure that you have access to these advanced features.
  5. Enter your full email address in the Email field and password in the Password field and tap Next

    Note: If you receive an error, press Cancel and follow steps 1-4 again. Type an incorrect email address with in the Email field and tap Next to continue. On the next page, correct your email back to
  6. In the Server field, enter as your server address.
  7. Leave the Domain field blank. 
  8. In the Username field, enter your full email address. 
  9. Your password should already be in the Password field from step 5. If it's not, enter your Google Apps password in the Password field. Tap Next.
  10. Select the Google services you want to sync, such as Mail, Contacts, and Calendars and tap Save. To receive and respond to meeting requests on your device, you need to turn on both Mail and Calendar and New events in your Google Calendar settings. See below for more information.
Congrats! You've set up Google Sync!

Choose your Default Calendar

If you have multiple calendars on your device, you may not see your ND calendar immediately when opening the calendar app, or you may save events to another calendar when you mean to save them to your ND calendar. To set your default calendar in iOS, follow these steps:
  1. Tap Settings
  2. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars
  3. Scroll down to the Calendars section and set the Default Calendar

Customize your Mail, Calendar, and Contact settings (Exchange Only)

To enable 'New events', sign in to your Google Calendar using the web browser on your phone or computer. Sign in to Google Calendar with your account and go to Calendar Settings > Calendars > Click on the Notifications for the calendar you want to sync. Under Email check 'New events' (and any of the other Invitation settings you want enabled e.g. changed events, cancelled events, event responses), and click Save.

Enable "Send Mail As" feature

Gmail and Google Apps users can send mail from a custom "From" address using the web browser on their iOS device or computer.

  1. Sign in to Gmail using your web browser and go to the Accounts tab.
  2. Under Send mail as, click Add another email address you own.
  3. In the Email address field, enter your alternate email address. If you want this address to be your default one, deselect Treat as an alias.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Select Send through Google Mail and click Next Step.
  6. Click Send Verification. Gmail will send a verification message to your other email address to confirm that you own it.
  7. Open your other account and either click the link in the message Gmail sent or enter the confirmation code in the Accounts section of your Gmail settings.
  8. Go back into your Gmail settings and set this account as your default one.

After you've made these changes, your iOS mail app may still show you're sending mail from your primary account and not this new address. However, when your recipient receives the email, your address should appear as the new address you've set up in "send mail as". Send a test email from your device to make sure your email appears how you want it to.

Additionally, Gmail and Google Apps users can send mail from their iOS mail app using a custom "From" address. To enable this feature, do the following:

  1. On your iOS device, go to
  2. Select your device and check Enable "Send Mail As" for this device.

Enable "Delete Email as Trash" for this device

With Google Sync for iOS, the default setting when you Delete email in your iOS Mail app is that Gmail will archive the message and not delete it. When you Enable "Delete Email As Trash" for this device, pressing Delete in your iOS Mail app will delete that email from your device and send it to your Gmail Trash.

To enable this setting, go to in your mobile browser. Note that this page is only available to users who've selected English (U.S.) as their language.

If you accidentally delete a message that you didn't mean to delete, you can find it by signing in to your Gmail inbox in a web browser and going to the Trash. By default, the Trash is emptied from Gmail every 30 days.

Turn your Calendar On

If you cannot see your calendar, your calendar may be turned off. If you are using Exchange with Google, you can turn your calendar on by following these instructions:

  1. Tap Settings
  2. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars
  3. Tap the account that contains the Calendar you wish to enable
  4. Tap the switch that shows as OFF next to Calendar, so that it turns ON
  5. Tap Save

Windows Mobile

Windows Mobile 7.x

To set up Google Sync on your Windows Mobile 7.x device, please follow the steps below.

Getting Started

  1. On Start, flick left into the App list and then tap the Settings icon.

  2. Tap Email + Accounts.

  3. Tap Add an account and select Google.


  4. Tap the Email address box and type in your

  5. Tap the Password box and type your password.

  6. Tap Sign In.
    Note: If you receive the error message: "we couldn't find the settings for the account information you entered. make sure the email address is correct, then tap 'try again'" You may need to reset your password at If you've already reset your password, tap try again to receive the option to manually configure account settings. Enter the following information:

    • Email Address:

    • Server Address:

    • Ensure that the SSL option is selected

    • User name:

  7. If you wish to modify which types of information is synchronized between your phone device and your account, tap Settings and then Email Accounts.  Tap on your

  8. Tap on the options you want to sync in Content to sync and then tap done (the check mark).

You’ve now set up Google Sync for your Windows Phone 7.x device.

Windows Mobile 6.x

To set up Google Sync on your Windows Mobile 6.x device, please follow the steps below.

Important Note: Make sure that you have backed up any Contacts and Calendars from your phone to your computer before proceeding.

Getting Started

  1. Open the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync application on your device's home screen.

  2. Click Set up your device to sync with it.

  3. Enter as the server address.

  4. Ensure that the SSL option is selected.

    Sign In to Your Google Account

  5. Click Next.

  6. Enter your full email address as the User name.

  7. Enter your Google Account password as the Password.

  8. Leave the Domain field empty. If your device requires you to enter a domain name, enter google.

  9. Click Next.

  10. Check Contacts, Calendar, or Email, depending on which you'd like to sync. (Tasks is not supported and will lead to an error if checked.)

  11. Click Finish.

  12. Press the Sync softkey on the left to synchronize.

You've now set up Google Sync for your Windows Mobile device. 


BlackBerry Browser

You can use any smartphone to access Gmail, Calendar, Google Docs and a host of other Google Apps, all from the phone's mobile browser. There, you'll have much the same experience as when using apps on a computer's web browser.

  1. Launch your phone's mobile browser, and go to

  2. Touch the app you want to use to open its launch screen. Launch the app, and if prompted, sign in to your Google Apps account by entering your and leave the password field blank. You will be taken to a SSO page to log in using your NetID and password.

BlackBerry 10 with ActiveSync

BlackBerry smartphone users who subscribe to Google Apps can integrate their account using Microsoft ActiveSync, where the default integration type would normally be a combination of IMAP (email) / CalDAV (calendar) / CardDAV (contacts).

To integrate the Google Apps account using Microsoft ActiveSync, perform the following steps on the BlackBerry 10 smartphone:

  1. On the homescreen or from the BlackBerry Hub, swipe down from the top bezel.
  2. Select Settings > Accounts > Add Account > Advanced > Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync.
  3. Complete all of the required fields, including the following:
    • Username:
    • Server Address:
    • Port: 443
  4. Select Next.
  5. Select items for synchronization and select Done.
