Map a Drive to Your Own NetFile Space, Departmental NetFile Space, or Another User's Public NetFile Space

NOTE: Mapping network drives requires on-campus connectivity to the ND-secure wireless/wired network.  Off-campus users may also map drives by first connecting to the Notre Dame VPN

Windows
 

Map a Drive to Your Own NetFile Space, Departmental NetFile Space, or Another User's Public NetFile Space (Windows)

  1. Go to Start > My Computer
  2. Select Map Network Drive from the Menu Bar
    NOTE: Windows will automatically assign the next available drive letter, but you may choose a different drive letter from the drop-down menu. We suggest N:
  3. In the Folder field, type the following path, depending on the NetFile space you want to map:
    a) To map a drive to your own NetFile space, enter the path name using your own NetID: \\fs.nd.edu\~yournetid
    b) To map a drive to a departmental NetFile space, enter the path name with the departmental NetID: \\fs.nd.edu\~departmentnetid
    c) To map a drive to another user's public NetFile space, enter the path name with the other person's NetID plus the folder name ("Public" in the example):

  4. You may choose to automatically reconnect to this drive when you log in using the check box provided.
  5. Select the check box for Connect Using Different Credentials.
  6. Click Finish
  7. For the user name in the Windows Security window, enter: adnd\netid (either your own NetID and password or the departmental NetID and password)..

  8. Click OK
  9. Click Finish to complete the drive mapping
     

You can now find the NetFile drive by opening My Computer.

Mac

Map a Volume to Your NetFile Space (OS X)

  1. On the menu bar, open the Go menu and select Connect To Server...

  2. In the Connect to Server window, for the Server Address, type the address as you see it below, substituting your own NetID in place of 'netid' and click Connect.

    Example: smb://fs.nd.edu/~netid
  3. To map a departmental space, follow steps 1 -2, substituting the department NetID. When prompted, enter the departmental password and click Connect.
  4. To map to another user's public NetFile space, follow steps 1-2, and substitute the other user's netid followed by /Public (smb://fs.nd.edu/~othernetid/Public) and click Connect.

You should now see the icon for the mapped drive on your desktop and you can access files there as you would on your own hard drive.
